“I’ve always had a positive attitude about my learning,” said Ara learner, Madison Thompson, whose dedication and work ethic have been praised by her online course facilitators.
Madison, 18, began her further learning journey at the end of 2020, enrolling in the New Zealand Certificate in Business (Introduction to Small Business) (Level 3).
Keen to avoid student debt and earn as she learned, Madison chose to study online via eCampus NZ.
“I wanted to work and study at the same time so I could gain the skills I needed while having an income to pay for my education,” she said.
Madison realised that working towards this qualification would give her a good introduction to the world of business and help her fulfil her dream of owning a business in the future.
“I’ve always wanted to do something in business. I thought studying small business was a good place to start,” she said.
When asked about the differences between learning at school and online, Madison said she quickly got used to the online learning environment.
“After a week or so, you get used to the new way of learning,” she said.
One of the reasons Madison likes learning online is having the flexibility to go at her own pace and fit her learning around work.
“I can study in my own time, when I have the time,” she said.
Madison completed this qualification in April, 2021, after impressing her facilitators with her motivation to succeed. She said her dedication towards her study came naturally.
“This is what I want for my career. When I want something, I go get it. I knew that if I worked hard, I’d get a good outcome out of it,” she said.
After completing her Level 3 certificate, Madison immediately enrolled in the New Zealand Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4) and began the next step in her learning journey.
She was particularly interested in learning more about team management, and her success in her first qualification motivated her to take her learning to the next level.
Madison is modest but, when pressed, admits that she is enjoying the outcomes of her hard work.
“It feels good because I know I’ve done something good,” she said.
“My family are happy for me.”
