Project Managing a Career

The opportunity to undertake a real-life, hands-on building renovation project was a highlight of the eCampus NZ NZ Certificate in Project Management (Level 4) course for Jenny O’Brien.

“Managing all aspects of the day to day renovation project was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be, but it was also hugely rewarding. Coordinating a wide range of people who all had specific jobs to do and roles to play provided me with incredibly valuable insights into the real world demands of managing a full-scale project. I am hoping to pursue a career in Project Management so having this virtual experience has given me the practical knowledge and confidence to take that next step,” said Jenny.

Jenny, who lives in Timaru, will graduate from eCampus NZ following completion of her certificate, in early 2019. But the study won’t stop there, she has already taken the next step and enrolled to compete a New Zealand Diploma in Business, majoring in Project Management. Jenny believes this qualification will give her the edge she needs to find a challenging role as a project manager.

The certificate took six months of full-time study and Jenny enjoyed the flexibility that on-line learning provides.

“I have also studied in a classroom situation through Ara, but I’ve learnt that I do like being able to complete work in my own time and at my own pace. The eCampus NZ teachers are helpful and the videos that are available as part of the course of study are great.  I also enjoy participating in the discussion boards which let you meet other class mates, share information and help each other out.

“A key to success when studying online is ensuring you have self-discipline and great time management. These are all skills that are needed to be successful in the workplace so, it’s not just the course content that’s useful, it’s also the way you learn”.
