Karn Heavey found the NZ Certificate in Business through eCampus NZ, beneficial to his career ambitions.
Karn had a background in computing and a master’s degree in information studies but was looking for a qualification to open up career options in first line management.
That is when he enrolled for a NZ Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4) qualification offered by eCampus NZ through Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT).
“I’ve been working in the project management field for several years and at some point, in my career, I’d like to develop into a first line manager,” Karn said.
“This course provided me with the foundation knowledge and skills to progress this.”
He currently works as an IT Project Manager at Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) managing IT projects, resources, budgets, and scope.
Karn is looking forward to using his newly acquired skills in his existing role.
“By completing the qualification, I am able to motivate and apply the appropriate leadership approach to team members to positively influence them to be the best they can be,” he said.
The benefits of learning online
Karn enjoyed the flexibility and convenience of fitting online learning around his personal and work life.
While continuing to motivate himself to complete coursework and assignments was a challenge, he found creating a good study plan and schedule helped.
“I was able to motivate myself to complete the weekly course work and assessments set,” Karn said.
Learning support
The Napier resident couldn’t have completed his study without the assistance of his eCampus NZ facilitators, along with his friends and family.
“The facilitators were amazing,” Karn said.
“They’ve got the experience, patience, and expertise to guide and answer anything you are confused about or just need clarification on.”
“Also, having whanau and friends within my support network assisted with my motivation levels to do the best I could.”
Karn’s recommendation
Karn thoroughly recommends the course for anyone looking to move into first line management.
According to Karn, the courses are very well structured, designed around learners and fitting tasks into a busy schedule.
“It is just the best,” Karn said.
“The programme is structured in a way that you can work on course materials and activities on your own and you learn everything about being an effective first line manager.”
“The eCampus offering is tailored to managers who would like to upskill or someone who is new to a first line management position.”
“This study has provided me with the knowledge, practical skills, and methods to pursue a career in first line management.”
What did it feel like to finish the programme?
Karn was thrilled to complete his NZ Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4).
“It’s just incredible and I feel very proud of myself,” he said.
