Learning has changed – take a fresh look

There was a time in the not too distant past when the word ‘study’ was associated with dread. Education options were limited and the experience itself was far from enjoyable.  Think drawn out lectures from a tutor standing in front of a class scrawling unintelligible formulas on the board as students frantically took notes – you get the picture.

For many, study became more a case of having a good memory than having a thorough understanding of the content being learned. Course material was learnt by rote, and learning methods were dull.

Thankfully times have changed! Learning has had to adapt to our changing culture, a culture where equality and connectivity are key, where the student is at the centre of the learning experience.

Teachers are no longer the autocratic centre of classroom attention. Learning methods have evolved and the teacher’s role is now one of facilitator and supporter. This encourages students to be more involved in the learning process, ensuring higher levels of student engagement.

In a world where answers are just a Google search away, learners are shown how to filter information to glean what’s relevant and credible. There is less emphasis on being fed vast quantities of information, and more on tailoring information so that it is meaningfully interpreted and applied ‘hands on’.

Highly personalised training options are now available, meaning study can be something to look forward to rather than dread. Passions can be further explored, and career paths changed for the better.

The rise of online learning means that less disruption is experienced as study can be fitted around existing commitments. The transition to further learning is no longer daunting and time consuming if you embark on an online course. Life does not ‘stop’!
