Learning about Learners

Having spent more than twelve years working with students, as both a tutor and as a student advisor, Leanne Houston understands what learners need in order to achieve their goals. An Enrolment Coordinator at eCampus NZ, this instinct is more valuable than ever – as she advises and helps place students in the right courses to suit their needs.

“You have to listen and really understand the individual. Why they are studying, what they want to achieve and what is realistic in terms of time and ability. We deal with hundreds of students a week who are looking to study online for many reasons. They come from a broad range of backgrounds and demographics. The challenge is to get to the bottom of what makes them tick,” says Leanne.

Working from home, part time in rural Canterbury, while caring for her two school-aged children, Leanne loves her role at eCampus NZ for its flexibility and the options it provides for people in similar situations.

“I get to work from home and work part time while my children are in school. It is my dream job because of its flexibility. This is just one of the reasons eCampus NZ is the online study provider of choice for many of our students. Just like me, they have home commitments or work commitments and need to study in their own time and at their own pace. Online learning makes this possible, ”says Leanne.

Most students encounter Leanne or the team of Enrolment Coordinators at the pre-enrolment stage. They are there to provide assistance and advice on course selection and the enrolment process. After listening and talking with a student, the Enrolment Coordinators develop tailored study plans that plot the learners study pathway.

“We work with the student to create custom study plans. We give them time to make edits and then, once confirmed by the student, we send the study plan away as part of their enrolment application with eCampus NZ. It’s a great tool that many students really value. Seeing something on paper can be just what you need to get motivated and set some goals,” says Leanne.

Leanne has a love of horses, the great outdoors, her children and walking.
