From Student to Tutor

Last time we checked in with Jessica Shirley, it was 2016 and she had recently completed one of our flexible online courses. Nervous about walking into a traditional classroom, online learning was just what she needed to achieve her study and career goals.

“There was a time in my life when I would never have been brave enough to step inside a classroom, due to anxiety problems. Having the option to study at home, in a safe and familiar environment, was hugely beneficial,” said Jessica.

Fast forward two years and Jessica returned to eCampus NZ to study our New Zealand Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Teaching (Level 5). Jessica is using what she learned to better share her knowledge of digital photography, video production and web development with learners studying at our partner NMIT (Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology).

“I am, where I am today, due to study. Online study has made me thirsty for learning. I now get to share my passion every day. It’s great.”

Jessica says the courses she tutors at NMIT are designed to give learners practical knowledge which they can use to make a difference to both their work and home life.

“Digital photography is a skill everyone should learn. Professional photography really makes a difference to the finished photo. And the best thing is it’s easily taught. The course is practical and a joy to do. We have helped young people, retirees, business owners and parents wanting to capture their family life. It is just fantastic. I just love watching people sparkle as they learn how to do something new.”

Between running her own photography business and working at NMIT, the mother of two has a full schedule. But she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I think it’s really important to have a dream and a goal to achieve. Study can change your life. I would never have imagined this future for me. But the reality is, with study you just never know where you will end up. That’s what makes it so special.
