“Follow your passion!” they say. Yeah right. I mean, how many Richard Bransons can there be in the world? We can’t all pay our bills by owning record companies and airlines. And besides, chances are you don’t even know what your passion is.
All around us are people of all ages struggling to find a job they love. Ironically, the thing that stops us finding our true path is often the ‘wrong’ job that we’re stuck in, as it devours our time and energy.
To break the cycle, we need to take the time to find out what drives us. Below are some ways to discover your purpose and passion. If you take the time, you’ll be closer to living the life you want and deserve.
1.Be positive.
Many of life’s most amazing inventions were discovered by accident! Yes, the x-ray, penicillin and the microwave oven were all stumbled upon whilst looking for something else. Ditch the negative attitude and be open to what crosses your path. Don’t be so wedded to an outcome that you miss an opportunity. The reality is you can follow your dream, and by being positive you open a world of possibilities.
2.Switch on your passion radar
On the surface, it may seem like you enjoy a certain thing because of the obvious connections with it. But once you delve deeper you realise it’s the secondary associations that ignite your passions. For example, you may think you love teaching because you love maths. But on closer reflection you discover that it’s empowering others and problem solving that gives you the greatest buzz. Follow your curiosity. Find out what piques your interest.
3.Find the golden thread
When you have a list of the things that you enjoy, look for the golden thread that weaves them all together. It’s very possible that there is a job out there that combines leadership, project management, maths and relationship building for instance.
4.Take it for a test drive
Once you’ve done the initial discovery, plot your route to following your passion. Enrolling in a course will help you get the additional skills you need to earn a living from what motivates you. Courses ‘test drive’ your passion, giving you the opportunity to try before you buy.
5.Back yourself to win
You’ve identified your passion and you’ve studied to fill in any knowledge gaps. You’re ready to fly. You can do this! Create a vision board or a list of affirmations to keep your confidence levels up. Then send out your CV, start networking, and be prepared to live the life you’ve been dreaming of.
