Awakening online learning

Toi Ohomai – one of the largest tertiary providers in the Bay of Plenty region has partnered with eCampus NZ. The partnership brings the total number of tertiary institutes involved in the eCampus NZ online learning platform to seven.

Kieran Hewitson, Associate Dean Academic Development at Toi Ohomai, says the move will ensure many benefits for the wider Bay of Plenty region.

“A core focus for Toi Ohomai is on improving education outcomes for rural communities. Online learning opens many doors for those who are unable to participate in traditional on-campus education,” says Kieran.

Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is a relatively new ITP in New Zealand – it is an amalgamation of two high performing institutions – Bay of Plenty Polytechnic in Tauranga, and Waiariki Institute of Technology in Rotorua. The institutes merged in May 2016 with Toi Ohomai servicing more than 13,000 students. Toi Ohomai specialises in offering qualifications and courses in primary industry including forestry, health and nursing and marine science.

The partnership with eCampus NZ, enables Toi Ohomai to offer business courses and qualifications online.

“With a high employment rate across the country, the place for online learning is only set to increase,” says Kieran. “Online learning means those who are already working can still pursue professional development by studying at home, in the weekends, or at night – it gives more options to those who need flexibility. We are excited to be offering online learning to our community of learners,” says Kieran.

Other eCampus NZ providers include Ara Institute of Canterbury, Otago Polytechnic, Universal College of Learning, Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, Eastern Institute of Technology and NorthTec.
